Staffordshire County Council Adopts the Industry’s First Pay as You Drive Scheme
GreenRoad in collaboration with insurance specialist Admiral announced the launch of the industry’s first “pay as you drive” scheme in an effort to encourage Young Drivers to drive safely. In a joint effort both of them are offering some UK councils an encouragement programme which rewards young drivers with cheaper insurance premiums and cash vouchers if they drive safely.
Staffordshire County Council is the country’s first council to take benefit of the scheme by setting up GreenRoad’s Safety Centre in up to 500 cars in the county. All young motorists who participate in the Young Driver Coaching Programme will be given a 25% discount and every month drivers who drive safely and stay green will get a 10% discounted insurance premiums as vouchers which could be worth of £156 per driver.
In April 2008, young drivers as many as forty of them from Staffordshire County Council led by example by setting up GreenRoad Safety Centre in their cars. In the six month trial period the attitude of the drivers and their skills improved dramatically. The number of high risk driving manoeuvres reduced by almost 58%. The overwhelming success of the pilot scheme of Staffordshire and GreenRoad has won them the esteemed Prince Michael International Road Safety Award.
Drivers part of the scheme not only practised safe driving but a green one as CO2 emissions of their cars were very low. Product development manager of Admiral, William Williams said that new drivers pay huge premiums and therefore he hopes that a 25% discount in their premiums will give them a boost to sign up for this new initiative. Senior Vice President of GreenRoad, Eric Shishko said that Admiral is the first such insurer to reward drivers for the way they drive. With more and more insurers entering the market, Admiral is discovering new and innovative ways to attract new customers and retain existing ones.
